Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): Symptoms, Causes & Early Warning Signs

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a common circulatory condition in which the arteries that supply blood to the legs and feet become narrowed due to plaque buildup. This reduced blood flow makes it difficult for the muscles to get enough oxygen, especially during physical activity. PAD is often underdiagnosed because many people mistake its symptoms for normal aging or muscle fatigue. Early identification is essential, as untreated PAD can lead to serious complications like non-healing wounds, infections, and increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

The most common symptoms of PAD include leg pain or cramping while walking (known as claudication), numbness, coldness in the lower legs or feet, slow-growing toenails, and weak pulses in the legs. In advanced stages, patients may experience rest pain, dark patches, or ulcers on the legs or feet. PAD is most commonly caused by atherosclerosis—fatty deposits in the arteries—with major risk factors including smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. People above 50, especially those with diabetes or smoking history, are at higher risk and should be screened.

Early diagnosis and lifestyle changes can significantly improve outcomes. Treatment options include supervised exercise programs, medications to improve blood flow, and in severe cases, minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty or stenting to open blocked arteries. Quitting smoking, controlling diabetes, managing cholesterol, and regular walking can dramatically slow the progression of PAD. If you are experiencing leg pain during walking or any signs of poor circulation, consult a vascular specialist early. Timely treatment can prevent complications and help you maintain an active, healthy life.
